We’ve been doing alittle work with the XBox Kinect to see what techniques we can use for live shows. Here’s a little sneak peek into what we’ve done so far.

XBox Kinect, Quartz Composer, Synapse, Syphon & Resolume Avenue 3

The 3 Windows shown here are Quartz Composer (top left), Resolume Output (top right) and the Synapse wireframe window (bottom middle).

Xbox Kinect:
This is a product developed by Microsoft for the games console. It’s a hardware, camera based way to interact with devices by movement.

Quartz Composer:
A bit of apple developer software used to create and manipulate animations using OpenGL.

Synapse: http://synapsekinect.tumblr.com/
The software used to act as the “drivers” for the Kinect hardware. Very, very clever indeed!

Syphon: http://syphon.v002.info/
Allows you to take video from any supported software and feed it into another. Nice! In this case, it was used to take the rendered output of QC and feed it into Resolume. Syphon currently supports Quartz Composer, VDMX, Modul8, MAX/Jitter and you can download the FFGL plugin for Resolume Avenue.

Amon Tobin

Amon Tobin

One of the most respected artists on the Ninja Tune catalogue, Amon Tobin alongside V Squared Labs and LVTHN unleashed an audio-visual behemoth last night at the Roundhouse in London. The project marks his 7th album release, ISAM.

Tobin’s renowned for his glitchy, sample based, poly-rhythmic music bordering on experimental, mind-bending soundscapes, video of this calibre complements it perfectly.

I’ve been around the visual/multimedia block once or twice, but never before have I seen such an intricately mapped stage withen the constraints of such an iconic venue like the Roundhouse. Spectacular attention to detail is putting it lightly.

Truly something words struggle to define. Below are a collection of videos from both his past work on the album Foley Room, and clips from his performance.

There’s a certain buzz on the VJ circuit at the moment around the new(ish) mapping techniques being used to project video on 3D objects. I want to touch on the two most exciting developments of late which we’ve been testing in the studio. Syphon and Mad Mapper.

Syphonhttp://syphon.v002.info/

To put it simply, this little open source piece of pixel playfulness allows supported video applications to share ins and outs. The output of Resolume can goto the input of Mad Mapper for example. You see where this is going…

Syphon currently supports Quartz Composer, VDMX, Modul8, MAX/Jitter and you can download the FFGL plugin for Resolume Avenue.

Mad Mapperhttp://www.madmapper.com/

This amazing bit of software allows you to morph video on a 3D plane enabling projection on objects like buildings, or in this case a tennis court.

Visit the above links to download the software and try it out, the Mad Mapper demo is available.

Old FreeFrame Plugins – Download

Some of us still want to use those old trusty FreeFrame plugins in our sets. Here are a few we’ve used over the years. Please be aware that FreeFrame plugins in newer VJ software, although supported, is not always the best idea and can compromise stability.

FreeFrame Plugins for Mac/PC:
resolume_ff_plugins_mac
petes_plugins_mac
resff_plugins_2005_mac
ffgl_random_plugins_mac
ckffplugs_1.0.10

FreeFrame Plugins for PC Only:

It’s also worth noting that these plugins are the result of hours/days of hard work by their respective creators, not us.

We wanted another new challenge here at VDHQ so we thought we’d try an experiment in which we are using an analogue audio source such as a guitar or the human voice to trigger a selection of video clips in real time.

Guitar triggering video clips in Resolume Ave

These clips are triggered depending on the pitch of the incoming audio signal. For example, the 12 tones and semi tones in a scale would directly relate to 12 visual clips within the chosen visual playback software.

Go! Go! Resolume!

We’re pleased to announce that Resolume have come on board and helped us out for our show at R&V this new years eve and provided us with the software we will be using to perform with. A big shout out to the crew there!

The Visual Division
